The RAL Gütegemeinschaft Energiehandel e. V.: a RAL quality assurance association that has been a reliable partner in mineral oil trading for over 10 years

The RAL Gütegemeinschaft e. V. headquartered in Mannheim was founded in 2003 by experienced and practically oriented mineral oil traders.

The negative reports in the media resulted in action to improve the public image of mineral oil trading. For this reason, the mineral oil traders joined to form a quality assurance association and, in cooperation with the RAL Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung e. V. in Sankt Augustin, determine the requirements for quality and testing.

During many meetings, in which WPD’s testing engineers also participated, the standards to be met by those displaying the RAL-approved quality seal were defined. Particular value was placed on the professional competencies of mineral oil trading in procurement, calculation of costs, communication, sales, supply, and the technical requirements for delivery vehicles.

Those displaying the approved quality symbol must demonstrate a high level of competence during regularly held inspections. In addition, unscheduled inspections that include delivery vehicles are performed at frequent intervals. Only in this way can it be ensured that the end user is reliably protected not just in regard to product quality (consumer protection), but also the supply of mineral oil products.

There are now more than 120 active members in the RAL Gütegemeinschaft Energiehandel e. V. In view of the many numbers of mineral oil traders in Germany this sounds low at first, but these members cover a market share of 25 %, making this fact more interesting.

Even the end users have now publicly recognized the presence of the quality assurance association and are increasingly asking about the RAL Gütegemeinschaft Energiehandel e. V.

Whoever wishes to use the RAL mark of quality must also demonstrate the required competencies and constantly monitor these in the future. These standards that have been set for mineral oil companies do bring expenses with them at first, but over the long term they pay off, since all the members in the mineral oil industry have unlimited access to professional consultants concerning technical and industry-related questions.
